Comprehensive atlas of the dutch united east india company

Asia Maior/Atlas Maior Publishers, in co-operation with the Royal Dutch Geographical Society (KNAG), the Netherlands National Archives (NA) and Explokart/Utrecht University, is currently preparing  a seven-volume atlas series covering all settlements and territories under the Charter of the Dutch United East India Company (VOC, 1602-1799), its composition based on facsimiles of manuscript maps, town plans, and topographical pictures from the collections in the Netherlands National Archives and various other VOC archives.

The first, introductory volume, a facsimile edition of the so-called Atlas Amsterdam or Atlas Isaak de Graaf, was published in November 2006. The Amsterdam map-maker Isaak de Graaf made this general atlas of the VOC's possessions between 1691 and c. 1704 on the orders of the Company's Directorate, the 'Heren XVII', and its preserved maps are now all in the Netherlands National Archives. The first four of the following regional volumes, II (Java and Madura), III (Malay Archipelago and Oceania), (Ceylon), and V (Africa), appeared in 2007-2009. All five volumes published so far are now completely out of print.

Concluding volumes VI and VII

The concluding sixth and seventh volumes, entitled VI: India, Persia, Arabian Peninsula and VII: East Asia, Burma to Japan, were both published in November 2010. Their combined contents provide a comprehensive overview of VOC manuscript maps, charts, plans and topographical illustrations of all those areas within the Company’s charter where for the most part the Dutch were never able to obtain major territorial possessions but which were nevertheless of crucial importance to their overseas trade. In the west (Volume VI) these include present-day India, Bangla Desh, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq and the countries of the Arabian Peninsula, in East Asia (Volume VII) VOC interests concentrated on China, Taiwan (a Dutch colony from 1624-1662), Japan (where the Dutch between 1641 and 1854 were the only Europeans to have a permanent settlement, on Deshima Island in Nagasaki Bay), Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Burma. In addition, Volume VII contains a 110-page Supplement section to the previously published volumes I to V.

All atlas volumes are published based on the following specifications. Size: 56 x 39.5 cm (h x w, book-block), 59 x 41.5 x 6 cm (total); paper and print: 170 gsm mc art paper, full-colour print; extent: 400-432 pages; design: hard-cover binding, cloth on 4 mm boards, rounded spine, foil-stamped print in gold on spine and front, full-colour laminated dust-jacket, slipcase with 4 mm boards with sized full-colour print, laminated; edition: single edition of 1,600 copies at maximum, individually numbered; text: complete text in Dutch and English; price: subscription price per volume € 295/- until 31 December of the year of publication, thereafter uniform list price of € 350/-, all excluding postage.
